Christmas Family Photo Ideas

Oh, yes I just went there.  It isn't Christmas yet, heck we haven't even made it past Thanksgiving.  So, why am I talking about Christmas Family Photo ideas before Thanksgiving?  Simple!  I am an empty nester and if I want a family Chrismas Photo for my Christmas card then I need to take the photo when the kids are home or at least in town and we can plan a photo shoot.

To start with, the photo shoot does not need to be an elaborate studio setup and it doesn't need to take more than 5 or 10 minutes (at the most).

So, where do we get a photo?

Glad you asked.  Local garden centers may have some Christmas decorations out.  So, check out your local business and make sure to ask permission before walking in with a family of 3 to 10 people.  Call ahead or better yet scope out the various garden business in town to find a location that may work and ask permission while you are there.  Be kind and buy something to give them some business.

What about lighting?  Wow, you are asking some awesome questions.

If the location is indoors, the garden center will likely have good lighting because they want their wares to look good.  They light their shops well, so you may not need to bring lighting.  Again, when you visit the shop beforehand take note of the lighting and the ceiling.  If needed, bring a camera-mounted flash and bounce it off the ceiling.

If you are outdoors, then maybe one light on a light stand.  Or again, when you are there plan where the photo will be based on the direction of the sun and you may not need a flash.

Use your home or another locale

Another location is right at home.  You know your house and your property and what would and would not make a good photo.   I prefer to do the shot away from the house at a garden center as I mentioned above.  If you don't want to use the garden center or your home, then check out some local parks or something in your town that will make for a good background.  Last year we had the family together after setting up some outdoor decorations and we used our front porch for the family photo.

I may write more about this, but I have so many ideas bouncing around in my head I can't get them out fast enough.  So, be sure to check back each week for any new ideas.
